Suspension producer receives funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research

KW automotive, the suspension producer, is a pioneer within the improvement and manufacturing of adaptive coilovers. As producer they’re additionally growing chassis management methods for his or her electronically adjustable coilover suspensions that may be managed by way of a smartphone app.

Within a couple of years, the owner-managed firm has constructed up immense experience on this section. Due to a brand new technology of dampers with stable piston know-how, it’s attainable to make use of two of those proportional valves in a single shock and to regulate them individually.

Since spring 2020 KW automotive has develop into a challenge companion of the utilized joint analysis challenge “Development of AI-based chassis control” (Entwicklung KI-basierter Fahrwerksregelung HT: KIFAHR). Together with “Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e. V. (DLR, German Aerospace Center)” KW automotive is growing a system primarily based on synthetic intelligence. This analysis strategy is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. More info at www.kwsuspensions.internet

Within the framework of the “Strategy for Artificial Intelligence”, the Federal Government of Germany helps the switch of basic analysis into the financial system. KW automotive, the suspension producer, with its experience within the improvement and manufacturing of adaptive coilover suspensions in addition to chassis management models, is firmly concerned on this course of.

This analysis, which is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research as a companion within the joint challenge “Development of AI-based suspension control systems” (HT: KIFAHR) along with the “Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e. V. (DLR, German Aerospace Center).

“The challenge goals to realize larger automation of the controller design course of and on the similar time higher adaptive management properties for semi-active spring/damper models within the chassis section for autos. To obtain this, clever studying strategies, so-called supervised studying and reinforcement machine studying, are for use on the inspiration of actual measured knowledge each for mannequin improvement and for the programming of the controller,” explains KW improvement engineer Michael Rohn.

By utilizing environment friendly and sturdy AI algorithms, it’s attainable to assemble advanced non-linear interactions within the general chassis. By utilizing machine intelligence, will probably be attainable in the long run to develop and alter automobile suspension.

“So basically, KW automotive is working on intelligent KW coilover suspension for tomorrow, in which the damping is adjusted autonomously”. The suspension manufacturer also supports chassis prototype production, design of tuning parameters for the AI on the vehicle dynamics test bench, test drives and evaluation.

KW automotive competence cluster for adaptive chassis control systems

Over the past years, KW automotive has built up significant expertise in the development and production of adaptive coilovers, KW software control systems, KW suspension control units and KW electromagnetic damper valves. The chassis manufacturer works in close cooperation with DLR.

DLR has developed a software control solution for adaptive suspension dampers together with KW automotive. These KW components are already used in selected vehicles from car manufacturers, such as the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet and Rimac C2. The new KW dampers with solid piston design technology, as used by the suspension manufacturer in the new KW Variant 5, are also suitable for adaptive systems.

“In our adaptive DDC suspension for the Mercedes-AMG G63, we use two electronically controllable proportional electromagnetic valves.” continues Michael Rohn. “With a chassis management system supported by AI, we provide a solution to the ever-increasing calls for of our prospects.”

Michael Rohn has been working in the R&D department at KW in Fichtenberg for more than eleven years and started working on the control of adaptive coilover suspensions at KW automotive when he was still a diploma student. Today, Michael Rohn works as department director in the suspension development at KW. Many of the engineers working at KW automotive started directly as diploma students at the suspension manufacturer.

KW automotive has been for many years a global market leader in its segment and continues to grow. Currently, almost 30 young people are in an apprenticeship at the suspension manufacturer. For years, KW automotive has received several awards from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for its exemplary commitment to training and education. KW also offers university apprenticeships in business administration, vehicle systems engineering, or industrial engineering. More information is available at www.kwsuspensions.net
