Artificial Intelligence for IAF’s enhanced air fight effectiveness

Indian Air Force (IAF) has been exploring the feasibility of enhancing the fighter jet capabilities in risk notion and risk engagement. Earlier this week, (April 5, 2021), in a e-symposium on `Artificial Intelligence for Air Warriors’’, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria introduced out the importance of the Artificial Intelligence for IAF operations, not just for the plane purposes but in addition in different assist roles. The e-symposium was organized by Society for Aerospace, Maritime and Defence Studies (SAMDeS) by means of the business physique FICCI.

The air chief in his handle had noticed that “even though Air Forces have been usually the early adopters of advanced technologies before they flourish in other areas but this situation has seen a different aspect in the area of new technologies.”

The non-military area applied sciences are discovering place within the combating forces and AI too is following an analogous curve. AI has seen an exponential development within the industrial sector and militaries world over are racing in direction of imbibing these superior applied sciences for his or her war-fighting capabilities. AI is certain to carry massive modifications within the aerospace area and the methods the air wars are fought.

According to the Air Chief, quite a few initiatives to automate the processes to enhance the effectivity of operations for plane upkeep have been carried out previously. Large quantity of digitization already has taken place by means of digital administration programs. IAF has now commenced its journey to discover AI and AI-based purposes on comparable tasks associated to upkeep of plane. IAF is presently engaged on predictive upkeep and use of AI for predictive risk eventualities.

He additionally highlighted that AI require some extra work to be allowed to be permitted to take part in autonomous missions, nevertheless, a number of purposes like in making the OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act ) loop of C4I extra environment friendly for Air Combat position and so forth.

What does a C4I professional who has labored on the event of the indigenous Naval C4I Combat Management programs say about AI in IAF?

Sharing his views with Financial Express Online, Milind Kulshreshtha, says, “AI is already finding its way into war fighting applications, and such niche solutions are available with only few nations and China happens to be one them. AI brings capability enhancements which are unimaginable with the present conventional technologies and some of the aspects are humanly impossible. India needs to speed up the inclusion of the AI in its Armed Forces to remain contemporary. AI algorithms can be created ab-initio since for some time to come, AI based military solutions are not likely to be made available for purchase by any of the nations possessing them.

According to the C4I expert, “The challenges apparent today are like availability of correct data set to train and test these MIL grade AI solutions, MIL Standard test procedures and most importantly, Smart Server within India to maintain information confidentiality for such a strategic data. The ‘man-in-the-loop’ as seen in other C4I systems shall keep these solutions soft-real time for the IAF applications, which is the right direction (since associated autonomous techniques are not yet mature). Within next few years, IAF shall have UAVs flying as part of the missions, and AI shall assist in making UAVs more and more autonomous in the formation flying missions.”

The Defence Acquisition procedures (DAP) are required to adapt to the way in which AI options are developed and advanced, which may be very in contrast to the way in which typical defence tools is inducted. However, it’s a race towards time for India to make the weapon platforms AI succesful in operations and Armed Forces management has to see past the executive points. It is obvious from the factors highlighted by IAF members; they appear to have acquired the proper imaginative and prescient to make it attainable to place AI in Air Combat operations.

AI for IAF Aircraft Maintenance

“These mature AI solutions are already implemented successfully in the commercial domain. And, AI is likely to be implemented in Air Combat. The predictive maintenance alerts and planning for aircrafts shall improve the efficiency, reduce unintended downtimes and enhance the equipment reliability. IAF shall do well to implement this AI based solution, while the research on other aspects like AI based combat solutions etc. is in progress,” he explains.

Ethics of AI in Combat

In conclusion, Mr Kulshreshtha says, “The issues related to ethics of making AI based self-motivated autonomous killing machine is already being debated world over, and reaching the ultimate goal of success of AI in Air Operations one day may come back to haunt the humanity. Therefore, such safeguards needs to be designed in the system, and ensured that the AI warfare solutions are not able to break such safeguards or inter-locks in anytime future but, unfortunately, this is a paradox which the AI experts shall forever struggle with.”
