Mitchell raises the idea that much of today’s artificial intelligence research bears the same relation to general intelligence as alchemy does to science. “To perceive the character of true progress in AI, and specifically, why it’s tougher than we expect, we have to transfer from alchemy to creating a scientific understanding of intelligence,” she concludes.
